In almost 20 years of working with many types of teams in a variety of settings, I (Andi Burgis) have come to these conclusions:
- Effective teamwork does not happen just because a group of people work, live or interact together
- Communication is the #1 challenge for any team or group.
- A huge component to successful teamwork is the ability to manage, handle, embrace and value- yes; value- conflict
- Our strengths overused become weaknesses
- The “feeling” of an effective team/ family does not occur until the team skills are built; and these skills are relationship based skills.
- Redirecting people hired for their individual skills and ability to a team model just because a company has grown and needs a team model, does not work without awareness and training to support the individuals with the transition
- Not all people want to be team players.
- Team development training is necessary to produce effective teamwork
- When results in an organization are down or off track, the focus needs to be on the relationship components to increase results.
