Discovering one’s self is a life long journey. In order to effectively stay on that important path, especially in times of change and challenge, it is critical to continue one’s personal growth and add tools to one’s toolbox.

In the 1990s, psychologists revealed that only about 10 percent of human communication is verbal.

To negotiate interpersonal challenges, we need to become more conscious of the non-verbal messages we send back and forth to each other. And perhaps more importantly, we need to learn more effective ways of handling all that non-verbal input by understanding how to more consciously process, respond to, and communicate what is essentially beyond words.

Equine Experiential Learning is a format that uses horses as active participants to help facilitate the learning experience for the human participants. By examining horse behavior and how the horses relate to us, we can better understand what may be more effective in our own human relationships. The equine-assisted model helps individuals learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses and then processing feelings, behaviors, and patterns, recognizing how these may relate to relationships, family and communication. Our equine teachers show you how to reconnect and follow your heart as your own source of knowing. Horses are sensitive to very subtle shifts in their environment and in people. As they reflect these shifts in their behavior, we can get feedback about ourselves. In working with the horses you will explore what it feels like to experience the joy of true spontaneity and discover how to keep on your journey in a peaceful, present and inspiring way.

Horses are consummate facilitators in the work of human development. The size of such an animal alone inspires a heightened state of awareness. These intelligent, sensitive creatures respond to changes in the handler’s behavior, which offers people constant feedback.

Horses are social creatures that readily and honestly respond to the challenges inherent in forming and sustaining relationships.

As animals that are preyed upon in nature, they have also retained a highly developed ability to sense changes in the stance and arousal levels of other herd members, an ability they easily transfer to interaction with human beings. Horses see through the slightest incongruities of emotion and intention, yet they are exceedingly patient and forgiving. Through a series of specially designed activities, participants deepen awareness of personal issues, core feelings, and areas of bodily tension that inhibit their ability to reach their true potential.

A tremendous boost in self-esteem and confidence comes from learning how to establish boundaries and direct a thousand-pound creature through mental focus, creative visualization, and clarity of intent. These skills, which can be difficult to teach in a conventional classroom or counseling session, have far-ranging applications linked to increased success in personal relationships, career, and parenting.

The workshops partnering with the horses as teachers offer outcomes such as:

  • Strengthening relationship skills.

  • Setting and respecting boundaries.

  • Approaching leadership as a generator, not a dictator.

  • Motivating others without dominating or micromanaging.

  • Developing a tolerance for vulnerability, in self and others.

  • Moving beyond limiting thought patterns, perceptions, memories/stories, and negative self-talk.

  • Handling heated emotional exchanges professionally.

  • Understanding and experiencing the potential of consensual leadership in leading teams

  • Dealing constructively with the contagious nature of emotion.

  • Employing the body as a tuner, receiver, and amplifier to read subtle nonverbal communication.

I knew I would be working with horses, and that we would be focusing on non-verbal communication, but I honestly thought it would simply be a matter of watching for a swishing tail or twitching ears. Your workshop gave me a much deeper level of understanding in regards to the energetic boundaries each of us emanates, and how powerful the response can be when these thresholds are crossed.  I was also fascinated to learn about, see, and actually “feel” these boundaries while interacting with the horses. I feel anyone who interacts with other people on a regular basis would benefit greatly from this workshop. The ability to create an environment of calm and mutual cooperation in any business dealing is invaluable. I would highly recommend you, your capable crew and your magnificent horses to anyone who has a desire to create more harmonious business relationships with others.
